RESEARCH ASSISTANT ON TUNISIA AND ALGERIA

Middle East and North Africa Division

(Tunis Office)

Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a Research Assistant to assist in the monitoring and reporting of human rights violations in Tunisia and Algeria.  This position will report to the Tunisia and Algeria Researcher in the Middle East and North Africa (“MENA”) Division.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  1. Provide research assistance and administrative support to the Researcher on Tunisia and Algeria;

 

  1. Develop contacts with government officials and other local actors, including using pre-existing networks among local rights activists and organizations to expand HRW’s monitoring capabilities and access to information; facilitate meetings with NGOs, government officials, and individuals able to provide information regarding human rights abuses;

 

  1. Assist the Researcher in monitoring human rights conditions and documenting abuses by collecting and analyzing information from a wide variety of sources including the government, local media, NGOs, victims, witnesses, and journalists;

 

  1. Assist the Researcher in following up on specific cases of human rights violations; assist in follow-up with authorities and NGOs on strategic cases on which HRW is advocating for justice;

 

  1. Under the guidance of the Researcher, provide write-ups of interviews, and, when appropriate, first drafts of briefing papers, letters, news releases, submissions to international bodies, etc.; prepare written summaries and synthesis of research for incorporating into HRW publications;

 

  1. Assist the Researcher in preparing reports for discussion with governmental officials, NGOs and other external partners;

 

  1. Be a full partner with the Researcher in managing local logistical issues, such as finding drivers, fixers, translators;

 

  1. Advise the Researcher on security issues, particularly in regard to field missions, including by developing contacts in insecure areas who can provide timely and trustworthy advice on security conditions and precautions;

 

  1. Assist with translations from English to Arabic;

 

  1. Travel to the field, including to insecure areas, with the Researcher and independently, to conduct research; travel internationally as appropriate to attend specific trainings or planning sessions;

 

  1. Provide written updates on local current events (in English);

 

  1. Schedule internal and external meetings, create agendas, prepare background materials, draft minutes and conduct follow-up to meetings including with government representatives and other authorities;

 

  1. Assist with travel arrangements and follow-up;

 

  1. Perform tasks including, assisting with the recruitment and coordination of interns, filing, photocopying, scanning, faxing, word processing, report filing and tracking; processing expenses, answering phones and e-mails, and processing incoming HRW mail; and

 

  1. Perform other tasks, as may be required.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education:  A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in international relations, law, journalism, social sciences or relevant studies is highly desirable.

 

Experience: Minimum three years of experience working in an office environment or assisting in field research is required. A background in human rights, legal, political science or development is preferred.

 

Related Skills and Knowledge: 

 

  1. Demonstrate an awareness and interest in human rights issues in Tunisia and/or Algeria.

 

  1. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work under pressure are required.

 

  1. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.

 

  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French and/or Arabic are required.

 

  1. Excellent computer skills and internet/social media research skills are required.

 

  1. Strong initiative and follow-through, the capacity to think creatively and strategically, excellent writing and editing skills, and a dynamic public speaking ability are required.

 

  1. Experience working for an international organization in a support function is highly desirable.
